Where microplastics in bottles come from
- The bottle itself. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) releases particles when the bottle heats up — sun in trucks, warehouses without AC, parked cars. Release increases 3-5× above 25 °C.
- The cap. The polypropylene cap releases particles every time you screw/unscrew it. Broken or degraded caps are worse.
- The bottling process. Industrial machines leave plastic residues in the water during filling. Studies show microplastics identical to those used in the packaging industry.
- The source water.Almost all natural water sources already contain environmental microplastics. Bottled water doesn't filter them during processing.
Is it actually dangerous?
Here we need to be honest: there's no conclusive evidence today that ingesting microplastics at usual levels directly causes disease. But:

The useful analogy: we don't know with certainty that ingesting 90,000 plastic particles a year causes illness — but neither did we know 40 years ago that tobacco caused cancer. Long-term toxicity studies haven't completed generational cycles yet.
How to reduce microplastics in your water
1. Switch to tap water with an activated carbon filter

Is glass-bottled spring water safe?
Much better than PET (10× fewer particles). Still worse than filtered tap and much more expensive. Only makes sense occasionally (gifts, special events, if your local tap is very bad).
Do supermarket jug filters work?
Brita, BWT, Xiaomi — yes. All use activated carbon that removes 85-99% of microplastics. Differences: cartridge capacity, mineral addition, design. Any of the 3 main brands is effective. Avoid uncertified generics.
What about GoPure-type filter bottles?
